Tyto Online currently has two different ways it can be accessed: a native app install onto Windows/Mac/Chromebooks, or through the web browser. We currently do not support tablets or other mobile devices.
Our downloads/installs are freely open for as many devices as you want. Access is controlled through accounts that your teachers will set up for students.
You can download and deploy a Windows or Mac installation package. These are not through their platform stores, but as .exe or .dmg packages that can then be distributed to computers.
Please see the information here about installation and internet unblocking for this version: https://tyto.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360015480932-IT-Guide-Tyto-Online-for-Windows-Mac
Benefits: Slower internet needed to run the game, as the product is pre-loaded, and better experience for kids (faster, more responsive app)
Disadvantage: Having to deploy an installation and keep it up-to-date when we put out updates (generally 1x per semester).
Web Gameplay Option
This is the direction we’re wanting to move everyone towards as we improve it. We are working on a native HTML5 version we expect to be ready in early October, but for now we have an app streaming solution available that is game streaming where it’s rendered in the cloud and delivered to your students’ browsers.
For this, no installation is needed, the kids will just log in to tytoonline.com and click to play the game. There will be a 2 minute load time, and then they can play in browser.
One issue we’ve run into is that we need a 3rd party cookie allowed from [*.]aws.amazon.com since we’re using their service for this. I have an article with instructions about that available here.
Benefits: No installation, no updating from the IT team needed
Disadvantages: Takes more bandwidth while playing (similar to watching a video), and the current version until ~October is slower for the student experience
